Scientific name: Leopardus wiedii

The margay is a small cat native to Central and South America that is listed as “Near Threatened” by the IUCN since 2008 because remaining populations are thought to be declining due to loss of habitat following conversion of forests.

The margay is a solitary and nocturnal cat. It lives foremost in primary evergreen and deciduous forest.

Costa Rica Margay

A rescued Margay at the Jaguar rescue Center. All their animals were being slowly reintroduced to the wild. I believe the guide says they are one of two species of cats with prehensile tails. And my little brother says their paws can rotate 180 degrees for climbing down trees. He was actually pretty friendly!
