The South African cheetah, also known as the Namibian cheetah, is the most numerous and the nominate cheetah subspecies.
The total population of the South African cheetah has been estimated at more than 6,000 individuals.

Cheetahs are known to be difficult to breed in captivity because of their social behaviors and breeding problems.
